I590/N564/N364: OUR FAVORITE SONGS--UH, MUSIC 20 January 2006 Ground Rules * This should be obvious, but everything we'll hear is a favorite of someone in the room. No matter how stupid you think something is, be careful not to hurt their feelings. * For simplicity, we'll go in alphabetical order by participant's last name. That puts the instructor first and the AI last :-) . When it's your turn, come to the instructor's station and be ready to help out or even take over (using iTunes); the only reasons for this I can think of are (1) if you want to start somewhere other than the beginning of your cut, or even jump around, or (2) if there's a real problem with the audio and you can do something about it incredibly quickly...not too likely, but you never know. * We have 11 pieces to get through in 50 min., so we'll take just 4 min. per person. To allow more than a few seconds for discussion, we'll spend 2 min. or less listening to each piece. Still, make your comments as brief as possible! Note: Unless someone strongly objects, I plan to use these selections as material for discussion later in the semester. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Don BYRD (1) Title: Coda of String Quartet no. 3 (2) Genres (according to me): classical chamber music, 20th century Genre (All Music Guide): classical; subgenre chamber music Genre (iTunes): classical (3) Composer: Bela Bartok Date of composition: 1927 Performer(s): Emerson Quartet Date of CD release: 1988 Performance medium: string quartet (4) Other comments: This is one of the most intense parts of one of the most intense pieces of music I've ever heard. (I was going to contribute jazz, a Coltrane thing, but no one gave me anything classical and I couldn't stop myself...) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Charlie HOYT Title: The Wand Genre (according to me): alternative/experimental rock Genre (all music guide): american underground, noise pop, alternative pop/rock, neo-psychedelia, dream pop, experimental rock Performers: The Flaming Lips In terms of performance medium, I would say that the sound (production) design and mix are important to the song. I'm sure it was recorded very recently -- probably within the last couple of months -- it is a single that was released in early January for their new record in April (though it has a mid-70's rock aesthetic). As far as I know it's an original -- not a cover. What I meant to say in my earlier e-mail is that I think the mix is nearly as important as the instruments and the music in this case -- maybe interesting in terms of music IR. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kurt KNELLER Title: The Tallest Man the Broadest Shoulders (Original composition) Composer: Sujan Stevens Release Date: July 5, 2005 My Genre: Folk/Indie Rock Allmusic Genre: Rock ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kris KURTIS Title: Tarzan Artist: Rocket From The Crypt Genre: I'd say rock or possibly indie rock-- it is hard to categorize All Music Guide says: Alternative rock/pop, indie rock Released: 1999, though the CD is a compilation of earlier works ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kyung Ae LIM 1) Title : Bird 2) Genre : Jazz(?), the theme melody is an old Korean folksong 3) Composer : Unknown, arranged by Kwang Min Kim Performers : Piano by Kwang Min Kim, Soprano Saxophone by Paul McCandless Album Title : Sentimental Spirit(Kwang Min Kim) in 2002 Performance medium : Duet for Soprano Saxophone and Piano(?) I have known this folksong since I was in Kindergarten. This melody and lyrics are very simple. The Korean musician, (one of my favorite ones in Korea), well arranged in the different style with Piano and Saxophone. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kris LOU Title: A Moment So Close Album: Live at the Quick Artist: Bela Fleck and the Flecktones Personal Genre Classifiction: Popular New-Age Jazz Possible Classifications: Bluegrass, Jazz, New-Age, World, Folk, Easy-Listening Recorded ca. 2000 An original Instrumentation: Guitar, Bass, "Drums" (electronic), Tenor Sax, Voice, Bassoon, Oboe, Tabla ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Greg McCRACKEN Artist: DJ Q-bert Title: Invasion of the Octobots iTunes genre: Hip Hop / Rap Other genre: Turntablist Recorded ca. 1998 * Is this a cover or an original? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Joey MORWICK (1) Bonsai Superstar (2) I would say "Indie Rock" for lack of a better genre allmusic.com listed "Rock" as the genre, but listed "Indie Rock" and "Experimental" as styles. (3) Nov 1994 (4) drums, electric guitar It's an original. I chose this song because I think it presents challenges for someone to even form a query for another person. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- John PALMER (1) a title: Flogging Molly - Devil's Dance Floor (2) [Genre(s) According to Me:] .Irish Punk .Punk Rock .Rock .Irish Drinking Songs [Genre(s) According to Allmusic and iTunes:] .Rock (allMusic, iTunes) .Alternative (iTunes) (3) the composer(s), date of composition, performer(s), date of performance, and performance medium (e.g., solo kazoo, vocal quartet, turntabilism, software synthesis, etc.). Composers: Dave King, Flogging Molly Performers: Flogging Molly Album Release Date: March 7, 2000 Performance Medium: Drums, Vocals, Guitar, Fiddle, Mandolin, Bass ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Will PIERCE The song ('Juniper') is an original by my band (Percival Potts). It is one of our most complex songs, and is an example of the type of music that I enjoy writing, performing and listening to. The first 2 minutes or so should be pretty representative of the overall piece. As far as a genre classification goes, I think a lot of people may lump it into the 'jam-band' category, but I would maybe be a little more descriptive and call it something like 'progressive jam rock'. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Don REIMAN Artist: Enmass Title: CQ mixed by Armin Van Buuren live 1-6-05 Genre: Trance
